Distinguished colleagues, innovators, professionals, and fellow Nigerians,
I stand before you today not merely as someone who has studied systems, travelled
widely, or worked across industries — but as someone who believes deeply in the
power of innovation, the necessity of integrity, the discipline of continuous
improvement, the strength of empathy, and the moral compass that comes from a fear
of God. These values shape how I see our nation’s challenges, and more importantly,
how I see our solutions.
Today, I want to speak about one of the most critical structural failures holding Nigeria
back: our power sector — the engine room of national productivity, innovation, and
human development.
THE REALITY: NIGERIA IS POWERING A DIGITAL AGE WITH ANALOG SYSTEMS
Nigeria is a nation of over 220 million people, yet we generate an average of
3,500–4,500 MW of electricity. South Africa, with onethird of our population, generates
over 50,000 MW. Brazil generates over 180,000 MW.
This is not a shortage. This is a systemic collapse.
According to the World Bank, Nigeria loses $26 billion every year due to unreliable
electricity. SMEs spend up to 40% of their operating costs on selfgenerated power.
Households spend over $14 billion annually on generators. These are not just
numbers — they are the dreams we have delayed, the innovations we have suffocated,
and the opportunities we have lost.
A nation cannot innovate in darkness. A nation cannot industrialize on diesel. A nation
cannot prosper on hope alone.
WHY THE SYSTEM FAILS: A STRUCTURAL DIAGNOSIS
Generation Deficit
Nigeria has 13,000 MW installed, but only 4,000 MW is available due to:
Gas shortages
Poor maintenance
Obsolete turbines
Water management failures
Pipeline vandalism
Transmission Bottlenecks
Our national grid has collapsed over 200 times in 13 years — one of the worst records
globally.
Distribution Failures
Over 55% of customers are unmetered
Technical and commercial losses exceed 40%
Revenue leakages are rampant
Billing corruption is systemic
Governance Breakdown
Over $16 billion has been lost to mismanagement and corruption in two decades.
This is not just a technical failure. It is a governance failure, a systems failure, and a
moral failure.
GLOBAL MODELS WE CAN ADOPT — AND IMPROVE UPON
Smart Grids — US, Germany, South Korea
Smart grids reduce outages, predict failures, and improve billing accuracy. South Korea
cut grid losses to 3%. Nigeria’s losses exceed 40%.
Decentralized MiniGrids — Kenya, India, Rwanda
Kenya deployed 120+ solar minigrids. Rwanda achieved 70% electrification using
decentralized systems.
Nigeria has the highest minigrid potential in Africa — yet fewer than 100 fully
functional systems exist.
Virtual Power Plants — Australia, Germany
VPPs aggregate thousands of small solar systems into a digital power plant. Australia
uses VPPs to stabilize its grid and reduce peak demand.
WastetoEnergy — Sweden, Singapore
Sweden converts 99% of its waste into energy. Nigeria generates 32 million tonnes of
waste annually — enough to power multiple cities.
GastoPower Optimization — Qatar, UAE
Nigeria flares 275 million scf/day of gas — enough to generate 3,000 MW.

My friends, Nigeria’s power crisis is not destiny — it is a design flaw. And design flaws
can be corrected.
A nation that values integrity can build transparent systems. A nation that values
innovation can deploy worldclass technology. A nation that values continuous
improvement can evolve beyond outdated models. A nation that values empathy can
ensure equitable access. A nation that fears God can build with accountability and
justice.
We must engineer a future where:
Every home has reliable electricity
Every business can operate without a generator
Every child can study without darkness
Every innovator can build without limits
The light Nigeria seeks will not come from hope alone. It will come from design,
discipline, and innovation.
It is time to engineer light. It is time to build the Nigeria we deserve.
